A great privilege of being a plastic surgeon is the opportunity to participate in international mission trips. We have traveled abroad to perform reconstructive surgeries to help both children and adults in other countries, including Guatemala, China and Mexico. We are thrilled to share the following galleries of some of the inspiring people we have met through our journeys.
Nuevo Progreso, Guatemala
Hospital de la Familia began as a small clinic in Nuevo Progreso, Guatemala, with roots in the San Francisco Bay Area. Surgical teams from the United States and Canada travel to the Hospital several times a year, performing 1500 surgeries each year. Stanford Plastic Surgery has a long tradition of encouraging its residents to participate in mission trips, and the Hospital de la Familia has been a favorite experience. As plastic surgeons at HDLF, we help treat patients with cleft lips and palates, as well as taking care of anyone with general plastic and reconstructive surgical needs. Dr. Weintraub traveled with Dr. Bill McClure and Dr. Josh Korman; Dr. Lim worked in Guatemala with Dr. Don Laub, Jr.
Guanajuato, Mexico
Hospital ISSSTE in Guanajuato, Mexico has hosted many generations of Stanford plastic surgeons invited by the renowned Dr. Abel de la Pena to engage in an intense weekend of plastic surgery and cultural exchange. The Mexican and American plastic surgical teams work late into the night to take care of cleft lip and palate patients. Dr. Lim traveled with Dr. Bill McClure on this very special trip.
